Abbeyfield
Houses Began 52 Years Ago
Abbeyfield is a retirement home with a difference. Abbeyfield provides
a friendly, small-scale home for independent seniors who no longer wish
to live alone. Abbeyfield provides an ideal living situation for those
who no longer want the burden of maintaining a family home and
preparing meals, but still want to live a social and active life in a
family-like environment.
Since the first Abbeyfield House opened in London, England 52 years
ago, Abbeyfield Houses have been established in many communities to
provide elderly persons with a secure and comfortable home. Abbeyfield
offers a friendly, supportive atmosphere meant to make older people's
lives easier and more fulfilling.
There are now over 9,000 residents in over 1100 Abbeyfield Houses
around the world. Abbeyfield Houses Society of Canada currently
oversees 30 homes, with more being built. The first Canadian Abbeyfield
House was established in 1987 in Sidney, BC.
Our Abbeyfield House in
Courtenay opened its doors to residents in 1997.
The Church of Saint John the Divine in Courtenay saw a need for seniors
housing and raised funds for home construction. Although the
church remains supportive, today the home is operated by an independent
non-dominational society with board members from varied community
sectors.
In 2007 the house marked a decade of service with a November tea, an occasion
to show off new common room furnishings purchased with generous donations from
community partners.
